Ministering in Spanglish
Ministering in Spanglish
I've had some unique oppurtunities for ministering to people in recent times and early this morning was another one. We had a slow night at work last night and were finished around what is normally our lunchbreak at 1:15am. Since we were almost finished, I told my crew to go ahead and finish unloading the last load of furniture and they could take a break while I was finishing my production report and cutting out the lights. When I finished, there was still some time left on their 15 minute break and when I sat down in the breakroom with them, one of them asked about my bible case I was carrying. One of the guys asked about if Catholics had a different bible than other churches and I told them that it was the same bible, just with 7 more books. They asked because most of my crew are hispanic and come from Catholic families, so I was speaking to them in broken spanish and my friend Carlos who is from Columbia was translating the rest. One of the guys asked if I was Catholic, and I told him I wasn't of any denomination. I told them that I had been to a Catholic church to worship before as well as Baptist, Methodist, Pentecostal, Church of God, and a few others. I showed them the book I had tucked in the pocket of my bible case called 'The Way' by JoseMaria Escriva who had been made a Catholic Saint by Pope John Paul II. We discussed the Pope and a few other things and I tried to explain to them as best I could with my limited spanish skills, 'Mucho iglesias es no importante, todos es Christo' or 'So many churches is not important, it's all Christ.' I know my spanish isn't that good, but they got the point. All the denominations out there shouldn't matter, you're either a christian or your not. It's all about Jesus Christ no matter what the church or language, even 'Spanglish'.
Your brother in Christ, Pete.
